The work was created in 1946 when the painter was already 86 years old. China is now the worlds largest auction market place for fine art, having already overtaken UK and the US in 2010. The local art market is abuzz with the news since a new era in Chinese painting and Calligraphy is said to have begun with this sale. Qi’s popularity was already well known but the high price was still a surprise. Qi’s works raked in more than 70 million U.S. dollars in sales worldwide in 2009, only behind the works of Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol
